Cloud couches

Soft foam modules, most of them boneless and delivered compressed, that grow to full size in your room. They suit walk-ups and narrow halls, renters who move, and anyone who likes to rearrange. The trade-off is structure: with no frame, a foam seat never holds a crisp edge, and the whole couch is soft all the way through. Read the seat height on each one before you order, because some of these couches sit close to the floor.

Framed sectionals

L and U shapes built on a wooden or metal frame, some with a storage ottoman or a console with cup holders. They hold a clean line and a firmer front edge to sit down on and push up from. Expect heavier sections and some assembly in the room, so the route from the door matters more.

Sleeper sectionals

A framed sectional with a pull-out bed under the seat and, on most, a lift-top storage chaise. They suit a living room that turns into a guest room. Framing and bed mechanism add weight, and the open bed needs clear floor in front of the sofa, so tape that length on the floor as well. On models with a storage chaise, the bedding lives there when nobody is staying over.

Power reclining sectionals

Framed seats with a button at the side that raises the footrest, and USB ports in the arm on ours. They suit movie nights and long evenings with your feet up. Leave room in front for the footrests and behind for the backs to recline, and plan an outlet near the sofa with the cord running along the wall.

Keep small children off the seats and away from the mechanism, and check under and behind a seat before you lower its footrest.

Curved sofas

A rounded back and seats that angle toward each other, so people talk without turning their heads. The curve shows when the sofa stands away from the wall, which means it needs a path behind it as well as in front. Its overall depth covers the full curve, so tape that depth on the floor before you order.

Curved pieces suit a room built around conversation or a fireplace more than one built around a wide TV, where the far seats angle away from the screen. Several of ours are cloud modules, so they travel compressed as well.

Sofa beds and futons

Smaller sleepers without a chaise. On a futon the back drops flat to meet the seat, and on our sleeper sofas the seat pulls out or folds open into a bed. They suit studios and home offices that host a guest now and then. Each seat is built for two jobs, so hold its seat depth against your own sofa before you order.

Choosing between them

Start with the route to the room, then the way you sit, then the extras. A tight stair or a small elevator points to a cloud couch or a futon. Overnight guests make a sleeper sectional earn its weight. For feet up every evening, look at a power reclining sectional, or at a lift chair when standing up is the harder part.

Questions

Questions about comparing ERYE lines

A cloud couch, because it travels compressed in boxes you carry, or a futon. Framed sectionals and sleepers travel as rigid sections, so measure the handrail gap and the headroom before you choose one.

Yes. The footrests rise on power, so plan where the cord runs to the outlet and keep it along the wall, out of the walking path. Measure from the outlet to the spot where the powered seat will stand before you settle the layout.

Size and storage. A sleeper sectional is a full L or U with a pull-out bed and, on most, a storage chaise. Sofa beds and futons are single sofas that turn into a bed, lighter and easier to fit into a small room.
